I have ftp'ed the new version of the `modes.mf' file. I don't see any
difference between the `laserjetfour' mode in version 1.0 and version 1.1.
This seems to be a mistake?
Anyway, the text accompanying the `laserjetfour' mode definition says
(among other things):
% [..] The |blacker| value was
% chosen to make 12pt text look good; for 10pt text, set |blacker=.66|.
If this means that the |blacker| parameter should be set to anything
above 0.1 (or perhaps 0.2), then I have to disagree. Perhaps it has
been thoroughly tested, but evidently different people have different
tastes. (I don't want to simulate a 300dpi printer with a 600dpi
printer ;-)
When we got our first LaserJet 4 printer, I tried all the 600dpi modes
in the `modes.mf' file. At that time, there were three such modes:
IBMFourZeroTwoNine (with blacker = 0.05)
VarityperFiveZeroSixZeroW (with blacker = 0.7)
VarityperSixZeroZero (with blacker = 0)
Clearly, the value 0.7 for |blacker| was way too much. The output was
`woolly' (like when you overexpose with a phototypesetter). I wanted
the output to be crisp and sharp. I found that to be the case with
the `IBMFourZeroTwoNine' and the `VarityperSixZeroZero' modes.
I ended up choosing the `IBMFourZeroTwoNine' mode (which I'm still using).
Another point to consider: If you intend to use the AMS Euler fonts,
you should remember that these fonts ignore the |blacker| parameter.
Thus, if you specify a high value (such as 0.7) for |blacker|, you
will see a large difference between the text and the math: the Euler
letters will appear very light within the dark body of CM or Concrete
text.
